Welcome to our school website.  As the school nurse, I would like to let you know what my role is as part of the educational team at Madison.  In the future, I will be sharing health information for you and your child. 

As you may know, the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) guarantees that eligible children with disabilities have the right to receive a free appropriate education in the least restrictive settings.  For an increasing number of children, however, access to education is only achieved through the provision of necessary health services ( e.g., tracheotomy care, catheterization, gastrostomy tube feedings ).  The school nurse assures that the specialized health services needed for eligible children to participate fully in their educational program are safely and appropriately provided.  Some of these responsibilities include:

Identifying children who may need health-related services

Assessing the child's sensory and physical health status with the assistance of parent(s) and health care providers.

Developing the individualized medical alerts and emergency care plans.

Assist the educational team in developing the Individual Educational Plan.

Assists the parent(s) and teachers to identify and utilize community resources.

Provide in-service training for teachers and staff regarding the individual health needs of the child.

Provide and/or supervises assertive personnel to provide specialized health care procedures in the school setting.

As parents, I need to rely on you to keep me up to date with how your child is doing medically.  Please call and let me know if your child will be going to the hospital, having surgery, changes in their medication and if they are sick.  My phone number is 734-246-8383 ext.  204 between 8:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  I look forward to hearing from you.
